Loch Lomond sits at the southern edge of the Highlands, just 20 miles north-west of Glasgow. The loch is 24 miles long and dotted with more than 30 islands; the surrounding Trossachs National Park adds munros, forests and picture-postcard villages like Luss and Balloch. It is the most accessible taste of the Highlands from either Glasgow or Edinburgh, easily done as a day trip or a stop en route to Oban and Fort William.

- Best months are May–September for weather and long daylight hours; November–February the west shore is quieter and often mist-shrouded.
- Bring waterproofs any time of year — the west coast weather changes quickly.
- Public toilets and cafés at Luss, Balloch, Balmaha and Tarbet. Petrol at Balloch and Tarbet.
- Midges peak June–August in still, warm evenings; carry repellent for shore walks.
- The A82 along the west shore is scenic but narrow — allow extra time in summer.
